Goals

Goal 1: Foster Student Independence
A tutor's most important goal is to help students become independent learners.

Goal 2: Stimulate Active Learning
Active is when the student does something to participate in learning to seek mastery of the material. Tutors foster active learning by structuring activities that require students to do the work. Active learning increases appreciation for learning and helps students practice self-expression, critical thinking, and self-initiated inquiry.

Goal 3: Mastering the Material
Mastering the material means knowing facts and concepts within a specific subject area and having command of the thought processes that underlie working within a specific subject area. Youth are able to think critically about topics within a specific subject area.

Goal 4: Increase Self-Esteem
Many students who are tutored have doubts about themselves as learners (and occasionally about themselves in general). Rather than telling students they are worthwhile, tutors help students feel good by providing learning experiences that promote the mastery of the material.
